Interlocking paver installation on a compacted base in Reno

Freeze and thaw is the real test

Reno crosses the freezing line dozens of times every winter. Each cycle moves the ground a little. A concrete slab is one rigid piece, so it cracks when the ground moves under it. Interlocking pavers are hundreds of small units that flex with ground movement instead of cracking against it.

Repair is where pavers win

If a section of pavers settles, individual pavers can be lifted, the base corrected, and the same pavers reset. Concrete has to be saw cut and repoured, and the patch rarely matches.

Up front cost vs lifetime cost

Pavers cost more up front. Over the life of a patio or driveway in our climate, the ability to spot repair and the resistance to cracking usually closes that gap.

Questions About This Topic

Can pavers go over my existing concrete?

Sometimes, if the slab is sound, drains well and the added height works with your doors. More often removal is the better answer.
